The classic positioning of Schubert was as a composer who died young and who was known only to a limited circle in his native Vienna. Nevertheless, we have a considerably larger number of pictures of him than one might expect. This is largely because his circle of friends and acquaintances was populated by musicians, writers, and artists. Several of those artist friends produced lifetime portraits of him.
