Schubert Bibliography

The SIUK website holds a growing bibliography of several hundred books, journal articles, magazines, catalogues, etc., about Schubert the man, his works, and general background information about his times. The books listed are not necessarily 'recommended', though the descriptions of the books may give an opinion about the worth of the book in the eyes of the reviewer - such views are not necessarily the view of SIUK, of course.

This page allows you to filter the bibliography by the language the book is written in and bibliography category. For performance reasons, the number of book details shown on the page is limited to 100, so filtering enables you to select a subset of the whole bibliography to see the details of the books you want, whilst remaining within that limit. When you first open this page, the defaults are to show books in all languages in the 'Sources' category. You can change the language filter and/or the category filter in the tables, below, and the list of books will refresh to show just those books that meet your filtering criteria. Some categories are nested: for example the biographies category is broken down into 'light' and 'heavy' biographies (largely on page count and style). You may select either 'light' or 'heavy' or you can select 'biographies' and get both 'light' and 'heavy'.

Schubert Thematic Catalogue of all his works in Chronological Order

Deutsch, Otto Erich

1951. 490pp plus 76 pages of appendices, indexes and corrections. Over 1000 incipits. Hilmar: 720

Publisher

London: Dent

Category

The original source of those 'D' numbers. Published in English as Deutsch was living in Cambridge at the time. Well over 550 pages, with a short preface and a few appendices. There is an incipit for each work (several incipits for the major works, operas etc.) and a short description and/or background information. Not exactly bedtime reading, but still invaluable. The detail has been superceded by the German language Franz Schubert Thematisches Verzeichnis seiner Werke in chronologischer Folge. Unfortunately, there has not been an English language translation of the updated ('D2') catalogue, making this edition still required for those whose German is inadequate.

The Autograph of Three Masters (Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms)

Harrow replicas

1942. 5pp. Not in Hilmar

Publisher

Cambridge: Heffer and Sons

Category

An old, and therefore rather poor reproduction of the famous manuscript with the autograph of Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms. Beethoven wrote his song Ich liebe dich on the two inner sides. The manuscript subsequently found it's way into Schubert's hands, and he used the whole of the first side, and a system of the last, for some sketches of a piano sonata. He then used the rest of the last page for some exercises for a pupil! Schubert subsequently gave the second half of the manuscript to his friend Anselm Hüttenbrenner. Brahms acquired the first half from Schubert's nephew Eduard Schneider in 1872, and the second half from a collector. Having reunited the manuscript, he then signed it, and eventually presented it to the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde.

London: The British Library

Category

A nice reproduction of the autograph score of the Piano Sonata in G major, D894, with an introductory essay by erstwhile SIUK Vice-President Howard Ferguson and brief notes on the paper by Alan Tyson. The various marks made by the publisher, Tobias Haslinger can be clearly seen.

Hilmar, Ernst (ed)

3-7618-0600-0. 1978. 31pp. (In English and German) Hilmar: 1549

Publisher

Kassel: Bärenreiter

Category

An adequate, though no better, reproduction of the autograph scores of the 3 symphonic fragments in D, which both Deutsch and Brown thought were sketches for a symphony in D, but which have subsequently turned out to be sketches for 3 symphonies, the incomplete D615 and D708A, and the Symphony #10 in D major, D936A, left incomplete at Schubert's death. Each page is signed by Nicolas Dumba. With an editorial note by Ernst Hilmar.

Franz Schubert Winterreise The Autograph Score

Susan Youens

0-486-25996-X. 1989. 74pp facsimile, 10 pages of notes. Hilmar: 3799

Publisher

New York: Dover

Category

A just about acceptable reproduction of the autograph scores for the two separately composed halves of Winterreise, D911. The first half is a mixture of fair copies and earlier states, the second half is entirely in fair copy. There is an introductory essay and notes on the composition of the work, Robert Winter on the paper details, and so on.
